In a week where a boating collision caused one man’s disappearance, a photo posted to Facebook has drawn the ire of many.

The photo shows five children sitting on the bow of a speedboat near the Trois-Rivieres Marina. The kids’ feet are dangling over the side of the boat and they hang on to the railing.

It’s unclear in the picture how many of the children are wearing life jackets, but at least one child is not.

Under the law, every person in a boat needs to have a life jacket, but they are not required to wear one.

The Lifesaving Society would like to see that law change, said Francois Lepine, from the Quebec branch of the Lifesaving Society.

“If you have it on the boat, just wear it. There are all kinds of life jackets today that you can use. There are life jackets that are very light to wear, and are inflatable if you go in the water,” said Lepine.

Despite the law, the Surete du Quebec say the boat’s driver could face a fine of $440 because of the precarious position of the children.
