MONTREAL - Profits at Hydro-Quebec increased 2.2 per cent to $1.79 billion in the first quarter as the provincially owned electricity producer was helped by very cold winter temperatures.

Hydro-Quebec says it sold 1.4 terawatt hours more power than last year as temperatures plummeted in February, one month later than in 2014.

Total revenues slipped slightly to $4.6 billion from $4.62 billion for the three months ended March 31.

Net power exports -- the difference between sales and market purchases of electricity -- increased $10 million. However, revenues from exports decreased 3.5 per cent to $625 million from $641 million a year earlier.

Electricity sales in Quebec increased by $263 million to $3.99 billion.
