Mayor Denis Coderre's administration appears to have adopted a mellower tone concerning workers who stormed into a council meeting last week.

Borough Mayor Anie Samson had been quoted in La Presse suggesting that some workers would be fired following the unruly pension protest on August18.

"Some people have lost their job, and they don't know it yet" said was quoted saying, adding that it was pretty clear criminal charges would be laid against those who took part.

She declined to repeat those comments Tuesday, and neither the mayor not the executive committee would comment on Samson’s statements.

A representative for executive committee member Russell Copeman told CTV Montreal that city officials are awaiting a full police report before deciding on what action to take following the protest.

However veteran city councillor Marvin Rotrand explained that there is posturing on both sides and that the situation will eventually get resolved.

"It’s a game we play with the unions every time. We fire a couple of them, then in the negotiations a couple end up getting suspended and then get rehired," he said.

Rotrand said that anybody who could be shown acting in a dangerous manner would be scrutinized more closely.

Meantime, Projet Montreal councilor for Ville-Marie Valerie Plante said Samson is “already adding fuel to the fire.”

The Montreal Police Brotherhood is accusing Samson of trying to influence the police investigation into the incident.

“This makes no sense at all,” said brotherhood president Yves Francoeur., adding that it puts the chief of police in an unsustainable position.

The sentiment echoed by the opposition at city hall, which said the SQ should have investigated.

“We think it's a big mistake.  It should have happened right at the beginning,” said Plante.

Municipal Affairs Minister Pierre Moreau agreed the protesters shouldn't be able to get away with what they did.

“I think nobody's above the law, everybody will agree on that,” he said.

Union leaders told CTV Montreal that none of the union members have been met by investigators as of yet.

No one has been charged.
