The cause of death for Granby Zoo gorilla N’sabi won’t be known for some time but another ape could be replacing him soon.

N’sabi died on Friday at age 21, a relatively young age for gorillas who can live up to 45 years. He was one of three West Africa gorillas at the zoo, with the other two being his half-brothers.

Karl Fournier, the zoo’s head of animal care, said N’sabi had symptoms similar to a bad flu. He was given antibiotics and remained under supervision of veterinarians and keeps, but died nevertheless.

A team from the University of Montreal’s faculty of veterinary medicine has conducted an autopsy but Fournier said more analysis needs to be done to determine why N’sabi died.

Fournier said he is examining the possibility of bringing in another male gorilla, but a final decision has not yet been made.
