The fire department and Gaz Metro are taking readings after a carbon monoxide leak sent a dozen people to hospital Monday afternoon.

A call came in to the fire department just after 2 p.m. that a carbon monoxide leak occurred in a building at 2100 Mont-Royal Ave. at de Lorimier Ave.

The leak forced the evacuation of the National Bank on the first floor and residential addresses on the third and fourth floors.

The leak was caused by renovation work on a natural gas heating system.

A total of 20 people were seen by Urgences Sante on the scene and about a dozen people brought to hospital, including a firefighter. One person was reported to be in serious condition, though their condition has not stabilized.

No one will be permitted entry into the building before the carbon monoxide readings are at a safe level.
