Montreal Canadiens defenceman Douglas Murray has been handed a three-game suspension for his hit on Mike Kostka Tuesday night.

A video posted to the NHL website notes Murray “delivered a forceful blow to Kostka’s head, making it the main point of contact and causing a serious injury.”

“It’s important to note that Kostka makes no sudden movement that significantly contributes to this head contact,” it continues.

Murray has said there was no malicious intent to the check on the Tampa Bay Lightning , but it was deemed illegal.

He will miss games against the Ottawa Senators, Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks.
