Canada's Eugenie Bouchard was eliminated from the Australian Open on Tuesday after a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Russia's Maria Sharapova in the quarter-finals.

The loss was a disappointment for the Westmount, Que., native after reaching the semifinal a year ago at Melbourne Park.

Bouchard became the first Canadian -- female or male -- to play a Grand Slam singles final, losing to Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic at Wimbledon.

Bouchard finished with 13 winners and 30 unforced errors on Tuesday, missing on both of her break point chances while dropping serve four times.

“She’s someone who really goes after her strokes,” said Sharapova about Bouchard after the match, “I tried to be the aggressive one even though she’s always the one who’s pushing.”

Sharapova will not go on to duel against Ekaterina Makarova in the semi-finals.
