COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - Adam Jones scored a hat trick, and Mark Matthews added two goals before leaving the game with an injury, as Canada downed Australia 12-4 at the world field lacrosse championships on Tuesday.

The win gave the Canadians (4-1) second place in the blue division behind the United States (5-0), and granted them a bye into Thursday's semifinal. The U.S., who beat the Iroquois nationals 18-5 earlier in the day, also advanced straight to the semis.

Jordan MacIntosh, Curtis Dickson, Zack Greer, Jeremy Noble, Cam Flint, Wesley Berg and Jesse King -- in to replace Matthews -- also scored for Canada.

Anson Carter scored two for Australia (2-3), who will play Scotland in a quarter-final playoff game Wednesday, and James Lawerson and Nigel Morton added single goals.

Matthews fell to the field, clutching his left leg after colliding with Australia's Ben Newman behind the Aussie net with 5:11 to go in the third quarter. He limped to the sidelines and did not play the rest of the game.

Play was stopped for approximately 10 minutes with 2:31 left to go in the third quarter when lights went out at the field.
