A bystander has died after a dramatic early morning shooting in St-Michel ended in what police believe to be a dramatic car chase.

Witnesses reported hearing three or four shots at 4:00 a.m. Thursday on Charland St. near De Lille St.

Two vehicles fled the scene, with one of them striking another car near the intersection of Port-Royal and St-Michel, sending debris flying.

The driver of that car, 76-year-old Jean-Libord Jeanty, was taken to hospital in critical condition, but died of his injuries later Thursday evening.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene of the collision. Police said he is known to them and his vehicle had bullet holes in it. The man faces reckless driving charges but police said other charges could be added as the investigation progresses.

On Friday Chayanne O'Neill Peralta-Garcia was charged with manslaughter.

"We are trying to understand what led to the gun shots and also the chase," said SPVM spokesperson Andre Leclerc.

Authorities are still searching for the driver of the second car.
