One man was hurt and the bomb squad had to search a neighbourhood after a home invasion overnight in Montreal.

Police say incident began around 1:30 Thursday morning when four men staked out an apartment on Eglise Ave. near Laureandeau St.

Officers say three men then forced their way inside and attacked one resident, hitting the 21-year-old man with a club or some other blunt object.

The burglars then grabbed some electronic gear and fled the scene, with their partner driving the getaway car, but it was in vain.

Police soon tracked down and stopped the thieves and arrested the four of them, aged 19 to 22. Police say all four young men have had brushes with the law before.

While searching the scene police also found a suspicious package and, fearing it could be a bomb, brought in the explosives division to analyze and defuse it if necessary.

The beating victim was taken to hospital and he is expected to make a full recovery.

There were two other people in the apartment at the time of the attack, and they were not hurt.

The four suspects are expected in court Thursday afternoon.
