Bombardier Aerospace is planning to scale back on production by the end of January 2010, a decision that may lead to layoffs in Montreal.

Pierre Beaudoin, president and CEO of the Quebec-based multinational company, made the comments while giving a speech at the Canadian Club of Montreal on Monday afternoon.

The company has not yet decided how much it will cut back, or how many employees could be affected.

The decline in production will affect CRJ regional aircraft, which are assembled in Montreal, and business aircraft, assembled both in Montreal and in Witchita, Kansas.

According to the company, the demand for such aircraft has decreased significantly in the past several months, because of the recession.

At the beginning of the year, Bombordier announced that it was laying off 4360 employees. In Montreal, 1740 people lost their jobs.
