A former mayor of Boisbriand, a town councillor, and a former vice-president of the engineering firm Roche have been found guilty of fraud, corruption and breach of trust.

Robert Poirier, the mayor of the town north of Laval from 1998 until 2005, and France Michaud, the engineer, were arrested and charged in April 2011 as part of Operation Hammer.

Claudie Briere, a councillor, was also arrested as charged, as were Sylvie St-Jean, another mayor of Boisbriand, and Lino Zambito and Giuseppe Zambito of the now defunct Infrabec construction company.

St-Jean and the Zambito brothers pleaded guilty to their roles.

Authorities proved in court that Poirier, Briere and Michaud conspired to give Roche lucrative contracts worth millions of dollars.

This case hinged on a contract for a water filtration system in the town.

Poirier argued that he respected the laws in place at the time.

Boisbriand's current mayor, Marlene Cordato, said in a statement that she was very pleased with the judgment, but says more work has to be done.

"This proves that we were royally robbed!" wrote Cordato.

The guilty will be sentenced at a later date. They face up to 14 years in prison.
