A hiker came across a grisly sight when he spotted a human corpse washed up in the St. Lawrence River in Rimouski Monday at about 10:30 a.m.

The body appears to have spent considerable time in the water as it was impossible to immediately determine if it was a man or a woman.

Authorities transported the body – found near the lighthouse at Pointe au Pere - to the Rimouski morgue for examination.

An autopsy will attempt to determine the person’s identity.

Rimouski is a town of about 50,000 that sits about 540 kms northeast of Montreal.
