The president of Montreal’s blue collar union has narrowly avoided a vote of confidence that followed allegations she had spied on workers.

At a meeting in a Rosemont church on Saturday, members of the city’s 6,500 member union rejected a motion to hold the vote which could have led to the ousting of Chantal Racette as president. The vote against the motion passed with a narrow majority of 50.6 per cent.

Racette had been accused of spying on two union executives and supporting a meeting during work hours that was later deemed an illegal walkout.

Racette declined to speak to media except to acknowledge the meeting got heated and that she had much to think about.
