The BEI have taken over an investigation into a police chase in Pointe-Calumet that resulted in the death of a 66-year-old pedestrian Sunday night.

Police were reportedly at the Pointe-Calumet Beachclub for an electronic music event when a police officer noticed a vehicle making questionable maneuvers.

When authorities decided to follow the vehicle—loaded with three passengers—it peeled off at a high speed, and police quickly lost visual contact.

Two other police officers received information about a vehicle travelling at a high speed on Andre-Soucy St., where it ultimately collided with an electrical pole.

However, as the vehicle fled, it hit and killed a 66-year-old male pedestrian on impact.

The driver of the car—a 23-year-old man—and the two passengers were subsequently arrested and taken to hospital for the treatment of minor injuries.

Eight investigators from the BEI travelled to the site of the impact to try and reconstruct the events that lead to the man’s death. Two investigators from the Surete du Quebec will assist.

The BEI investigates any incident where a civilian, or non-police figure, is killed or critically injured during a police intervention.
