A 10-month-old baby is in critical condition and a man is facing charges following an assault in Brossard over the weekend.

Matthew Elmy, 31, appeared in court Monday to face assault charges after police were called to a home on Nancy St. in Brossard at 4 a.m. Sunday.

Officers found the baby girl having trouble breathing and suffering major head injuries. The child belongs to Elmy’s girlfriend.

The baby is stable but in critical condition.

According to Elmy’s Facebook page, he has been dating the baby’s 24-year-old mother for three months. The page also revealed he has two children of his own.

Emly remains behind bars for the moment, but appeared in the Longueuil courthouse Monday, where the judge ordered him not to have any contact with his girlfriend.

The Crown gave few details about the assault.

The specific charge Elmy faces is called aggravated assault by injuring, mutilating, disfiguring or endangering a life.

Elmy returns to court Thursday for a bail hearing.

If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison.
