A 56-year-old man was killed by police Monday afternoon in Rawdon.

Police say the man barricaded himself inside his home and was wielding an axe at officers.

The Sûreté du Québec was called to the home on Ponderosa St., just before 2:30 p.m. from a person in crisis.

The emergency response team was called to the scene. Two officers were faced with the axe-wielding man, and they shot him twice in the chest.

The man died from the gunshot wounds. Quebec's independent investigation bureau (BEI) was dispatched to the scene to look into the shooting.
