A 34-year-old man was shot by Longueuil police early Tuesday morning following two armed robberies and a police chase in Brossard.

Patrol officers spotted the suspect’s vehicle at 1 a.m. It was linked to one of the armed robberies at a gas station on Taschereau Blvd. earlier on Monday night.

The suspect managed to escape, but police cornered him on a dead-end street in the industrial park sector, behind an Ikea distribution centre.

He was shot by police when he allegedly brandished a sharp weapon at police officers.

"What we understand is that it's possible the suspect approached the police officers with a sharp weapon in hand," said Surete du Quebec spokesperson Joyce Kemp. "And at that moment we know that gun shots were fired."

The victim from St. Lambert was seriously injured and transported to hospital in critical condition.

Kemp said at first his injuries were life-threatening. However, later Tuesday morning she confirmed that the suspect was in critical but stable condition.

Kemp said police could not confirm where the suspect was hit or how many shots were fired, but the case is under investigation.

The SQ is handling the independent investigation, as required by public security policy when a police force is involved in a shooting.
