A major fire at the abandoned Gray Rocks resort in the Laurentians broke out Tuesday evening.

Flames erupted from the former inn around 9 p.m., forcing several fire departments in the area to rush to the site to put out the blaze.

As of 10:45 p.m., they continued to fight the flames.

No one was injured.

The fire is considered by the Tremblant Police Department to be suspicious.

The Gray Rocks building is one of the largest buildings in the Laurentians area. It was the first resort built in the Laurentians – opened in 1906 by George and Lucille Wheeler.

Gray Rocks was once considered the go-to place for generations of families. The resort hit its peak in the 1980s, when the majority of its guests came up from the U.S.

In its final years the famous family-founded destination was losing millions of dollars each season, as it struggled to compete with emerging resorts.

After more than a century in operation, it closed its doors in 2009 and has been abandoned ever since.
