MONTREAL—As thousands of Quebecers moved over the past week, some pets were left behind like furniture.
An elderly couple in Longueuil adopted “Blackie” on Tuesday after the one-year old pup was found in a Laval home by a new family moving in. The dog had been abandoned, looked in a bathroom for up to three days.
Touched by the dog’s story, the handicapped couple took a $200 taxi ride to get the dog from a Montreal-area shelter.
“It’s really disheartening to see that despite the education and all the work that we are doing—the fact that there are low cost methods of sterilization out there—that we are finding that there is a 15 per cent higher rate of animals being brought to the SPCA through the year,” said Alanna Devine, the Canadian SPCA’s director of animal advocacy.
Only three per cent of landlords in Quebec allow dogs in leases. In Ontario, no-pet clauses are considered illegal. The SPCA wants Quebec to change the law.
