Officials are trying to contain a diesel spill at a water-purification plant in Longueuil.

Nearly 30,000 litres of fuel spilled into the Saint-Lawrence River and the city's sewer system, according to Quebec’s environment ministry. The ministry was notified of the spill at about 9:30 a.m., but the spill began at about 4 a.m.

Emergency workers say there is no risk to the city's drinking water and that no boil-water advisory is necessary.

The spill was caused due to equipment failure, said officials.
