A 13-month-old boy was in critical but stable condition in hospital Thursday evening after being found in the family's pool in Montreal.
The incident happened Thursday morning on Parkville Ave. in the Mercier-Hochelaga Maisonneuve borough.
Montreal police were called to the east end home just after 11 a.m.
The boy’s mother and her friend had pulled him out of the backyard pool.
Police gave the toddler CPR on the scene with the help of firefighters. Urgences Sante worked brought the boy to Ste. Justine Hospital.
His mother and her friend, both in their twenties, were treated for severe shock.
Constable Francois Collard said the child was left unattended for five minutes before being discovered in the pool.
This incident comes on the same day two Quebec coroners are calling for changes to pool safety regulations.
After inquiries into the drownings of children in Magog and St. Georges over the last two summers, the coroners are demanding that all pools across the province be enclosed by a fence.
Current laws make them mandatory for new pools only. Those built before 2010 are exempt.
