Thousands of homes and businesses south and east of Montreal lost power on Monday because of a problem at a South Shore switching station.
At its peak almost 120,000 customers lost power, from Valleyfield to Vaudreuil-Dorion to Chateauguay.
Around 12:40 p.m. a safety system at the Lery power station in Chateauguay was tripped, shutting off electrical current to thousands of customers on Montreal's South Shore.
Some people had power restored within 15 minutes, but Hydro-Quebec said it could be hours before electricity was restored to all customers.
The utility did not have an explanation as to why the safety system activated.
